"I've always been a dreamer, but I could never have imagined that an honour like this would come to a working-class English soccer player like me." Those were the words of Sir David Beckham on Friday as he became the latest Brit to leave his mark — quite literally — on one of the most famous pavements in the world.

The former Manchester United and England captain was honoured with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in Los Angeles, in a ceremony that perfectly captured the extraordinary life Becks has built on both sides of the Atlantic. And in true Beckham fashion, he didn't do it quietly.

Tom Cruise, Green Carpets and a Touch of the Surreal

Rather than the traditional red carpet, organisers rolled out a green, football-themed pitch carpet for the occasion — a nod to the 2026 World Cup, which is currently under way across North America. Beckham called the whole thing "surreal", and honestly, who could blame him?

Standing alongside Victoria and three of their children — Romeo, Cruz and Harper — the 51-year-old was visibly moved as his old friend Tom Cruise took to the microphone to sing his praises.

"To stand here in front of my friend Tom Cruise, the greatest movie star of our time, is quite frankly mind-blowing," Beckham told the crowd, turning to the Hollywood legend directly. "You welcomed us to LA 20 years ago, and you have been a loyal friend and an inspiration to me ever since."

Cruise returned the compliment in style, lauding Beckham's journey as "a Hollywood story" built on hard work, determination and global influence — on sport and culture alike.

From Leytonstone to the Walk of Fame

Beckham's star falls under the sports entertainment category, recognising not just his decorated football career but the cultural footprint he's left across the globe. The boy from east London who went on to play for Manchester United, Real Madrid, LA Galaxy and Paris Saint-Germain — and who now co-owns Inter Miami — has, by any measure, lived an extraordinary life.

"How fitting then that I am here today as we prepare to celebrate the opening here in the US of the 2026 World Cup," he said.

"It's a powerful moment to recognise how the sport I love so much has grown in this country over the past three decades."

It's a growth Beckham has been central to. His six seasons with LA Galaxy from 2007 are widely credited with helping to popularise football in America, paving the way for the sport's current boom stateside.

A Star-Studded World Cup Opener to Follow

The ceremony was just the warm-up act. Later that evening, Beckham and Cruise joined a glittering guest list at the Los Angeles Stadium — the SoFi Stadium temporarily rebranded for the tournament — to watch the United States take on Paraguay in their opening World Cup fixture.

Leonardo DiCaprio, Halle Berry, Owen Wilson, Rob Lowe and Paris Hilton were all spotted in the stands, as a spectacular Hollywood-style opening ceremony played out on the pitch. Performers danced around a giant World Cup trophy, with Katy Perry, Future, Tyla, Anitta and K-pop sensation Lisa all taking the stage. Perry, it should be noted, watched the match itself from the seats — alongside her partner, former Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau.

President Donald Trump, meanwhile, skipped the event entirely, instead ringing the US squad to wish them luck by phone. "I think you've a really good chance of going all the way," he told them. The team, for their part, made a decent fist of proving him right — running out 4-1 winners against Paraguay.

For Beckham, though, the day belonged to that star on the pavement, the green carpet, and a moment that even he couldn't quite believe. "I am living the American dream," he declared — and really, it's very hard to argue with that.
