There is something quietly spectacular about watching two generations of the same family command a room — and at the Chanel Haute Couture show in Paris on Tuesday, Tilda Swinton and her daughter Honor Swinton Byrne did exactly that.

The pair arrived hand-in-hand at the Grand Palais, both dressed in Chanel, and the resemblance between them was striking enough to stop photographers in their tracks. It was a rare public appearance together, and one that turned heads even in a room already full of A-list faces.

The Looks

Tilda, 65, wore a red and black sheer A-line dress from Chanel's cruise 2027 collection — a gauzy, striped design that exposed the legs, shoulders and chest, with a subtle nude undergarment creating the illusion of exposed dressing without actually revealing extra skin. An opaque scarf was tied asymmetrically at the waist, and she finished the look with Chanel pumps. It was a masterclass in making the sheer trend feel entirely her own — unexpected, architectural, and completely deliberate.

A Rare Outing Together

The celebrity mother-daughter duo don't often appear on the same red carpet, which made Tuesday's showing all the more notable. Honor has been building a quietly impressive career of her own. She made her screen debut alongside her mother in the 2009 film I Am Love and starred opposite her again in 2019's The Souvenir.

Tilda Swinton has never been one to follow trends, so it's fitting that her take would stray from the red-carpet norm — everything she wears works, because she always does things her own way.

Paris's Biggest Week

The Swintons were among the most-photographed guests at what has already been a glittering Haute Couture Fashion Week. The event, which runs from Monday 6 July to Thursday 9 July, features shows from 30 fashion houses including Balenciaga, Fendi, Dior and Jean Paul Gaultier. Earlier in the week, Sabrina Carpenter, Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas attended the Schiaparelli show, while Alexa Demie, Pedro Pascal and Elizabeth Debicki also turned out for Chanel.

Tilda is also among the admirers of Irish designer Michael Stewart and his label Standing Ground, which made its haute couture Paris debut this week. Stewart, who is from County Clare and works from an atelier at 180 The Strand in London, has dressed Swinton in a number of his signature sculpted creations — including a dramatic blue piece worn at an event in Seoul, a red gown at Cannes, and a corseted black leather and velvet look from his September collection. His celebrity following also includes Beyoncé, Florence Pugh and Naomi Campbell.

"If someone wears something of mine, they are my greatest advertisements. I like talented people," Stewart told the Irish Times ahead of his couture debut.

For Tilda Swinton, Paris this week was clearly more than a fashion outing — it was a family affair.
