It was the phone call nobody saw coming — least of all the contestants standing in the MasterChef Australia kitchen trying to impress a duchess. Prince Harry rang his wife Meghan mid-tasting during her guest judging debut on the show, interrupting proceedings with a warmth that even the cameras couldn't quite contain.
Meghan, 44, appeared as a mystery guest judge on the 18th season of MasterChef Australia, stepping in for regular panellist Andy Allen while he took paternity leave. The episode aired on Australia's Network 10 on Sunday 26 July, though it was filmed back in April during Meghan and Harry's four-day tour of the country, which took them to Melbourne, Canberra and Sydney.
'Have I interrupted something important?'
With the judging well underway, a producer walked onto the set and handed Meghan a phone. Her husband's face appeared on the screen. "Hi my love!" she said, beaming — before turning to the crew and announcing: "My husband's here."
"Have I interrupted something important?" Harry asked, as Meghan gave him a tour of the studio. "Well, we are actually in the middle of tasting all the dishes. We have four incredible cooks here," she replied. "It's amazing — they're so talented. We wish you were here."
Harry, who was in Canberra at the time visiting with veterans, was clearly charmed by the whole scene. Judge Poh Ling Yeow quipped that they had "fancied the joint up" for his wife, to which Harry replied warmly: "That you guys have. Wonderful." He signed off with an apology — "Very sorry to disturb you" — and a smile. Once the call ended, Meghan described her husband simply as "a charmer."
One of the contestants, visibly stunned by Meghan's presence before the phone call had even happened, perhaps put it best: "Who would have thought you come on here to make a roll, and you get to meet the Duchess of Sussex?"
'Call me Meghan'
Meghan was greeted by Poh Ling Yeow with a hug upon arriving, and when the fellow judge asked whether she should use her royal title, the Duchess was quick to wave it off. "Oh, call me Meghan. Absolutely, yeah," she said — a tone she kept throughout the episode.
Contestants were tasked with cooking a dish "fit for a Duchess" using Meghan's favourite seasonal ingredients: macadamia nuts, citrus, honey, and Brussels sprouts. Meghan proved a knowledgeable and enthusiastic presence on the judging panel, singling out a homemade sambal from one contestant's dish while gently teasing Harry over the phone that it might be "too spicy" for him.
The episode also gave viewers a rare glimpse into the Sussexes' domestic life through the lens of the dinner table. Meghan revealed that cooking at home means navigating "a lot of palettes to appease" — Harry, she said, leans towards "meat, potatoes and cream sauce", while she prefers "fish, grilled meats, and lots of citrus". On one front, however, the whole family is united: their children Archie, seven, and Lilibet, five, are confirmed Brussels sprout fans.
'An easy yes'
Announcing her participation ahead of the broadcast, Meghan said appearing on the show had been a straightforward decision.
"It was an easy yes because of two things: my love of food and my love of Australia. It's such a great show. I'm just really honoured that I was asked to be able to be here with you."
For fans of the Royal Family who have followed the Sussexes' increasingly transatlantic public profile, the MasterChef appearance marks one of Meghan's most relaxed and unguarded moments on screen — equal parts warmth, wit, and the occasional spousal ribbing.
