There are milestone birthdays, and then there are Meghan birthdays. The Duchess of Sussex turned 45 on 4 August — sharing the date, as it happens, with the late Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother — and she marked the occasion with equal parts glamour and gloriously grounded good humour.
Making a Splash
Celebrating in characteristically joyous fashion, the former actress posted a pair of black-and-white photographs capturing her leaping into a swimming pool, arms thrown wide, with a celebratory collection of birthday balloons floating behind her. She captioned the post "Thank you for the birthday love!" — appropriately soundtracked to Cliff Richard and The Shadows' 1963 hit Summer Holiday. According to People, the photos were taken during an early birthday celebration in California by a friend of Meghan's mother, Doria Ragland.
Meghan's lifestyle brand, As Ever, also took the opportunity to pay tribute to its founder. The brand referenced its Signature Candle No. 084 in its birthday post — a nod to Meghan's 4 August birthday.
The Birthday Fit: £25 and Absolutely Perfect
If the pool photos were the glossy opener, the second act was even more endearing. Meghan later shared a video on her Instagram Stories of herself dancing barefoot around her kitchen in full birthday mode.

Wearing a sparkling "Happy Birthday" tiara sourced from US chain Target, she paired it with a white slogan T-shirt emblazoned with the words "It's Giving Mrs" — a style identified by What Meghan Wore as likely from Etsy, priced at around £25. She completed the look with relaxed white pyjama trousers from high-end brand Eberjey.
Harry captured the candid, giggling moment on camera as Meghan twirled around her birthday balloons — a snapshot that felt about as far from stiff royal formality as it's possible to get, and all the better for it.
"I was thinking about something my husband told me ages ago... he was a helicopter pilot in the British Army for ten years. And sometimes on really hard days, he was like, 'My love, even if there's a storm happening, above the storm, the sun's always shining'." — Meghan, speaking at a Cookie Queens screening last month
A Busy Summer Before the Big Day
The birthday came at the end of a particularly full few weeks for the Duchess. On 23 July, she posted a carousel of photos from a summer holiday in England and Portugal with Harry, Archie, and Lilibet. A source told People the family love Portugal because "Archie and Lilibet can simply be kids" — keeping things low-key with beach days and time together as a family.

The family also visited England, where they privately met with King Charles III, and stayed at Althorp — the 13,000-acre Northamptonshire estate where the late Princess Diana spent her childhood — as guests of Harry's uncle, Charles Spencer.
Earlier in July, Meghan made her debut appearance as a guest judge on MasterChef Australia, filling in for Andy Allen who is on paternity leave. She described the visit as a "full circle" moment, referencing a previous trip she and Harry took to Australia before Archie was born, during which they announced the pregnancy.
45 and Thriving
Meghan shares her 4 August birthday with the late Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother, who was born in 1900. It's a coincidence that feels almost too neat for a woman who has spent years navigating — and ultimately stepping away from — the institution the Queen Mother so powerfully embodied.
"Happy birthday to our founder, @meghan. Lighting No. 084 to celebrate!" — As Ever, Meghan's lifestyle brand, marking the occasion on Instagram
Meghan and Harry typically spend the day with their children, Prince Archie, seven, and Princess Lilibet, five, away from the public eye. This year, at least, they let us peek in just enough — and honestly, the kitchen dancing alone was worth it.
