The Upside Down duo are finally making their cinema debut

Matt and Ross Duffer, the minds behind one of Netflix's most beloved series, are stepping away from Hawkins and heading to the big screen. Paramount has confirmed a release date of 3rd November 2028 for a brand-new film from the Stranger Things creators — though virtually everything else about the project remains shrouded in mystery.

The untitled film will be written and directed by the Duffer Brothers and produced through their own banner, Upside Down Pictures. No plot details, cast or even a working title have been shared yet, which has only added to the intrigue surrounding the project. For fans of the duo's knack for slow-burn suspense and carefully constructed worlds, that silence feels entirely deliberate.

A deal years in the making

The film is the first major fruit of the Duffer Brothers' four-year overall deal with Paramount, which covers film, streaming and television development. It's a partnership with a surprisingly personal dimension: Cindy Holland, Paramount's new chief of streaming, was the Netflix executive who originally greenlit Stranger Things. Matt Thunell, Paramount TV president, also worked alongside the brothers during their Netflix years. In other words, this isn't a cold studio arrangement — it's a reunion of sorts.

The move to Paramount comes after the brothers made no secret of their desire to make a proper theatrical film. Speaking to Variety in 2025, Matt Duffer was refreshingly candid about the pressure driving that ambition.

"We were anxious about it because we would turn 42 in the near future," he admitted — a rare moment of vulnerability from a duo more accustomed to building fictional horrors than confronting real ones.

For all their success on the small screen, the Duffers have only directed one film to date — Hidden, a post-apocalyptic thriller released through Warner Bros on the video-on-demand market. It may not have set the box office alight, but its screenplay was sharp enough to catch the attention of M Night Shyamalan, who brought the brothers on as writers for his Fox series Wayward Pines in 2015. That, in turn, led directly to Stranger Things — so Hidden carries more weight in their career story than its modest release might suggest.

Stranger Things isn't going anywhere

Fans of their television work needn't worry about being abandoned. The Duffer Brothers remain deeply involved in the Stranger Things universe as executive producers on the animated spinoff series Stranger Things: Tales from '85, which has already been renewed for a second series following a well-received debut.

The animated series, set in the same richly nostalgic world as the original show, signals that the brothers are determined to expand their flagship franchise rather than simply close the door on it as the main series winds down. The entertainment world is watching closely to see how they balance that ongoing commitment with the demands of their new studio relationship.

With a November 2028 date locked in and Hollywood buzzing about what they'll bring to the big screen, the Duffer Brothers have given themselves plenty of time to build anticipation — and, knowing them, they'll use every last second of it.
