There are few humbling experiences quite like being fact-checked by your own teenagers. Ben Affleck, Oscar-winning filmmaker, Hollywood veteran and twice-married romantic, has discovered that no amount of lived experience protects you from the withering gaze of a 17-year-old who has access to Wikipedia.
The 54-year-old actor opened up about the rather brutal family dinner table dynamic during a recent appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, revealing that his three children — Violet, 20, Seraphina, 17, and Samuel, 14, whom he shares with ex-wife Jennifer Garner — have developed a finely tuned system for deflating any attempt he makes at offering relationship wisdom.
The Clapback Heard Round the Dinner Table
It started, as these things often do, with the best of intentions. Affleck described how family dinners frequently turn into lively discussions about his children's friends, their dating dramas and the general chaos of teenage social life. Naturally, he felt he had something to contribute.
"I'll kind of launch into something at the dinner table and now I catch them giving each other looks," he told Kimmel, adding with admirable self-awareness: "I'm the caricature in this story."
The killing blow came from Seraphina, who — when her father began holding forth on the subject of a particular relationship — fixed him with a look and asked simply: "Oh, like you're the expert on relationships?"
Affleck had no real answer to that.
But Seraphina wasn't finished. On a separate occasion, in a bookshop, she spotted a title called I'm Sorry for Everything and turned to her father to inform him it was his autobiography. Affleck's response? "I was kind of proud of them though." Which, frankly, is the correct response.
A Romantic History That Speaks for Itself
To be fair to the Affleck children, the raw material for their roasting is considerable. Ben was married to Jennifer Garner from 2005 until their divorce was finalised in 2018, the pair having originally met on the sets of Pearl Harbor and Daredevil. Despite the split, the former couple have remained genuinely close, continuing to co-parent their three children with what appears to be real warmth and mutual respect.
Affleck then rekindled his early-2000s romance with Jennifer Lopez — one of the most scrutinised celebrity relationships of its era — and the pair married in Las Vegas in July 2022, followed by a second celebration in Georgia the following month. Two years later, Lopez filed for divorce in August 2024. The divorce was finalised in January 2025.
So yes. Perhaps not the North Star for romantic guidance.
Jennifer Garner, the Movie, and the Baggage
Affleck was appearing on Kimmel's show to promote his new Netflix thriller Animals, which stars Kerry Washington — though the casting of that role came with its own entertaining backstory.
He revealed that he had originally offered Jennifer Garner the role of a politician's wife in the film, describing her as "fabulous" and someone he would "love" to work with, adding that they are "really good friends." However, when Affleck stepped into the lead role after Matt Damon dropped out, Garner offered him some characteristically straight-talking advice.
"We don't wanna do that. You just get baggage," she reportedly told him — a verdict Affleck himself acknowledged was "probably for the best."
Kerry Washington was eventually cast opposite him. Animals arrives in cinemas and on Netflix on 9th October.
The Caricature in His Own Story
What makes Affleck's Kimmel appearance so enjoyable is the genuine good humour with which he tells all of this — there's no defensiveness, no attempt to reframe his romantic history as anything other than the chaotic, very public saga it has been. He seems, if anything, genuinely tickled by his children's precision. "I was kind of proud of them though" is the line of a man who raised sharp, funny kids and knows it.
Whether any of them will eventually come to him for relationship advice remains to be seen. But if Seraphina's bookshop instincts are anything to go by, they'll be fine on their own.
