Demi Moore has never been one to stay on the sidelines when her family needs her — and right now, the Ghost star is fighting with everything she has.
The Declaration That Changed Everything
The 62-year-old actress has stepped into the centre of her daughter Rumer Willis's bitter custody dispute over three-year-old Louetta, filing a legal declaration that makes for explosive reading. In it, Moore alleges she personally witnessed the allegedly aggressive behaviour of Rumer's ex, musician Derek Richard Thomas, 30 — and that it dated back to before the couple even split.
"[Thomas] had no consideration to Rumer, the baby, the process or anyone else for that matter. He essentially ruined what should've been one of the happiest moments of [Rumer's] life," Demi allegedly stated in her legal declaration, referring to Louetta's home-birth in April 2023.
The claim is just one part of a sprawling legal battle that erupted last July, following Rumer and Derek's 2024 split. Newly uncovered court documents, first reported by People magazine in the US, reveal that Rumer has accused Thomas of a 'persistent pattern' of 'insane emotional abuse', alleged to have taken place 'often in front of the minor child' and to have left little Louetta 'traumatised'.

A Family Already Under Enormous Strain
The timing could hardly be more painful. The entire Willis-Moore family has spent the past three years rallying around Hollywood legend Bruce Willis, 71, who was diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia (FTD) in 2023. The progressive condition has affected his speech, behaviour and movement, requiring full-time care — and sources say the emotional weight on the family is immense.
Against that backdrop, insiders say Demi has gone into full protective mode. A source close to the family told Closer: "Demi is in mamma bear mode — not only is she feeling like she has to protect Rumer, but she's also got her three-year-old granddaughter to worry about. Louetta is really the focus of this. Rumer has accused Derek of being abusive, so of course, Demi doesn't want him near her family, and she's doing everything possible to keep him away."

"It's turned very ugly, and it's causing Demi and Rumer so much anxiety; neither of them is sleeping properly — the stakes are just too high," the source added. "Rumer is already going through so much with her dad being sick, they all are. The last thing she needs is to be dealing with this court battle, but there's no chance she will back down. She says she's fighting for her daughter's safety."
Rumer's 'Reckoning Moment'
Rumer, 37, has spoken candidly about the moment she knew her relationship with Derek was over. Appearing on stylist Maeve Reilly's podcast The Inside Edit, she revealed that her friend's 2024 wedding had been the turning point.
"I heard your vows, and I just realised that the situation I was in was never going to look like that, no matter how much effort I put in," Rumer said. Describing the relationship as 'brutal' and 'challenging', she added: "I need to go and leave, no matter how scared I am, and find something that looks like this, because I want that."

Rumer and Derek began dating in 2022, going public on social media in November of that year before announcing their pregnancy the following month. They welcomed Louetta in April 2023, but Rumer has since said she knew by June 2024 that the romance was finished.
For Demi, who has spoken openly in recent months about embracing a liberating new chapter of her life — winning her first major acting award for The Substance and describing this period as "a wonderful new time of exploration and discovery" — the family's current ordeal is clearly taking its toll. But if there's one thing those close to her are certain of, it's that she won't stop fighting until her daughter and granddaughter are safe.
