First outing since the evacuation

It was the family appearance that few expected to happen quite so soon. Just weeks after fleeing their home in Provence amid a devastating wildfire, George and Amal Clooney stepped out for a glamorous evening on the shores of Lake Como — and this time, they brought the children.

The couple arrived by boat at the historic Passalacqua hotel on 10th August, accompanied by their twins Ella and Alexander, for a fundraising dinner benefiting the Clooney Foundation for Justice. It was a striking image of normality restored — and one that was all the more meaningful given what the family had endured in the weeks prior.

Amal, 48, was effortlessly elegant in a black midi dress with delicate floral embroidery, paired with open-toe stilettos, a red beaded evening bag and statement gold tassel earrings. George, 65, kept things polished in a grey suit over a crisp white shirt. The nine-year-old twins coordinated beautifully: Ella in a shimmering tiered gold dress, Alexander in a light blazer and striped shirt that mirrored his father's relaxed formality.

'We love Brignoles and our friends who live there'

The Lake Como outing follows a genuinely frightening chapter for the Clooney family. George, Amal and their children were among around 600 residents forced to evacuate the historic village of Brignoles in the south of France when a wildfire broke out nearby, reportedly burning around 320 acres of surrounding land.

As the family evacuated their 18th-century estate, Domaine du Canadel, George wrote a personal letter to Brignoles mayor Didier Brémond that was later shared by his publicist.

"At this point we have no idea whether our beautiful home makes it through this terrible moment. We hope you and the people of our city are safe."

He concluded the letter with a promise that he and Amal were committed to helping the community recover, signing off: "We love Brignoles and our friends who live there." Their property ultimately escaped the flames, and residents were subsequently given permission to return.

Mayor Brémond has since spoken warmly of George's likely role in the area's recovery, telling French news channel BFMTV: "I know he's going to contribute, there's no doubt about that." He added that this kind of generosity was characteristic of the Hollywood star, saying George "wants to participate precisely to feel fully integrated" whenever the town or surrounding area is affected.

A rare glimpse of family life

The Clooneys, who married in Venice in 2014, welcomed Ella and Alexander in June 2017 and have been notably protective of their children's public profile ever since. The twins are rarely photographed, and the family has been deliberate about raising them away from the glare of celebrity — something that has become especially important given Amal's prominent career as an international human rights lawyer.

Their decision to include the children at the Lake Como gala made the evening particularly notable. Appearances like these are uncommon enough to stop people in their tracks, and the sight of the four of them arriving by boat together — dressed up, together, visibly fine — felt like a quiet statement of resilience after a genuinely unsettling few weeks.

The foundation at the heart of the evening is itself a deeply personal project. Founded by the couple in 2016, the Clooney Foundation for Justice provides free legal aid and supports human rights initiatives in more than 40 countries, with programmes focused on free speech, women's rights and fair trials. It is a cause that sits at the intersection of both George and Amal's lives — his platform, her expertise.

The family were granted French citizenship in December, and their 425-acre Provence estate — which reportedly includes a vineyard, olive groves and a private ornamental lake, purchased in 2021 for a reported $8.3 million — has become an increasingly important base. The wildfires were a stark reminder of how quickly the peace they have built there can be threatened. For now, though, Lake Como was their answer: calm water, a cause they believe in, and their children alongside them.
