Matt Damon Takes a Rescue Dog on a Dream Date — and Reveals His New Film Nearly Broke Him

He plays one of history's greatest heroes on screen, but right now Matt Damon's real-life leading lady is a pitbull named Betsy — and he'd very much like her to find a forever home.

The Hollywood A-lister, 55, paid a visit to the Eastwood Ranch Foundation in Agoura Hills, California, to mark the state's Adopt-A-Pet Day, arriving armed with a bouquet plushie, a red bandana and enough charm to melt even the most guarded of rescue dogs. The visit, filmed for animal advocacy outlet The Dodo and shared on Instagram, quickly went viral — and it's easy to see why.

Betsy is a pitbull who was pulled from a Los Angeles County shelter and has spent nearly two years at Eastwood Ranch waiting patiently for someone to take her home. It's a wait that breaks your heart — and clearly broke Matt Damon's too.

The actor turned up to give Betsy the full date experience: toys, snuggles, a dressing-up session and a bag of goodies to take with her when she finally does get adopted. He even tied a red bandana around her neck to make sure she looked her absolute best.

Before meeting Betsy, Damon got acquainted with a handful of other residents — including JoJo, a six-month-old terrier-mix puppy more interested in chewing the toy basket than anything inside it, and Piper, a four-year-old dog who is blind and mostly deaf but still absolutely delighted by human company. There was also Duke, a bigger lad who greets everyone with a toy already in his mouth, which honestly sounds like ideal party manners.

Alison Eastwood, founder of Eastwood Ranch — yes, daughter of that Eastwood — explained that pitbulls like Betsy typically have a much harder time getting adopted due to unfair preconceptions about the breed. Betsy, she stressed, is wonderful with people and children, though she can be shy around other dogs. The rescue centre takes animals from kill shelters, meaning for many of these dogs, it really is the last chance saloon.

Matt and his wife Luciana — to whom he's been married since 2005 — already share their Brooklyn home with five rescue dogs and four daughters: Alexia, Isabella, Gia and Stella. So the chances of squeezing in number six were, theoretically, slim.

Theoretically.

"We have five dogs already," he told The Dodo with a grin. "We love to rescue dogs, they're just the greatest, and we live in Brooklyn, so it's tough to keep accruing these dogs — but we love them. I wouldn't bet against us leaving with a dog today."

He also cheerfully admitted that the family's ever-expanding pet count is largely down to Luciana's irresistible impulses. "It's not even a conversation at this point," he quipped. "She just comes home with them."

The Eastwood Ranch visit also gave Damon a chance to talk about his upcoming project — and he did not hold back. Christopher Nolan's hotly anticipated adaptation of The Odyssey is due in cinemas on 17 July 2026, with Damon playing Odysseus in what he describes as the most gruelling shoot of his career.

"It was by far the hardest movie I've ever made," he said, while sitting on the floor petting JoJo. "Chris likes to shoot everything real. So there's no green screen, no faking it, no studio stuff."

This marks Damon's third collaboration with Nolan — following Interstellar and Oppenheimer — but his first time taking the lead role. The cast around him is, frankly, staggering: Anne Hathaway as Penelope, Tom Holland as Telemachus, Robert Pattinson as Antinous, plus Zendaya, Lupita Nyong'o, Charlize Theron and Jon Bernthal in prominent roles.

Damon also noted a rather lovely connection between the ancient story and his day at the rescue centre. In Homer's epic, one of the most touching subplots involves Odysseus and his loyal dog — a bond that has endured in the public imagination for nearly three thousand years. "It's nice to think that almost 3,000 years ago, when that story was written, people were still thinking that way about dogs," he said.
