Paris Hilton has issued her most direct ultimatum yet to Provo Canyon School — and this time, state officials appear to be listening.
Utah's Department of Health and Human Services announced it has placed ten new conditions on the facility's operating licence, just days after Hilton appeared at a press conference backing medical neglect and malpractice lawsuits against the school. The timing was no coincidence. Within hours of Hilton speaking out, DHHS officials confirmed they had launched a formal investigation into the school's conduct.
"I am not backing down. Until you shut this facility down, I will keep showing up," Hilton said at the press conference.
A 13-Year-Old Left Without Emergency Care
The lawsuits centre on a deeply troubling incident from 18th May involving a 13-year-old boy who was allegedly left without proper medical attention after being involved in a fight with another resident. According to the legal claim, the boy sustained a broken jaw, a brain bleed and loss of consciousness — yet staff reportedly chose not to call 999 (or the US equivalent, 911), instead arranging transport to hospital via a non-medical vehicle.
DHHS officials confirmed the incident had prompted not only the new conditions but a wider review of the facility's practices. "Additionally, administrators failed to act on documented safety concerns and transfer requests submitted by the resident and their guardian prior to the assault," the department said in a statement.
The ten conditions now imposed on the school include an immediate pause on all new admissions, an increase in unannounced inspections, and a mandatory overhaul of its emergency response policies. Reform advocates have noted, however, that this is not the first time conditions have been placed on the facility — a previous set was due to expire on the very same day the new restrictions were announced, raising serious questions about whether the school has ever meaningfully changed.
Hilton's Personal Fight
For Hilton, this campaign is anything but abstract. "No child should ever be harmed in programmes meant to protect them. Our role is to hold providers to the highest standards of safety," said Shannon Thoman-Black, director of the Division of Licensing and Background Checks.
