That quote, widely shared across social media, perhaps best captures the tone of the reaction — which was less outright dismissal than a strange kind of affectionate bewilderment. One viewer called the performance 'unintentionally camp' and said the level of self-belief on display was 'inspiring low-key'. Even the harshest commenters seemed unable to muster actual dislike for Lopez herself.

To be fair to Lopez, the Dolce & Gabbana brief was no small assignment. The Italian house confirmed she closed its Alta Gioielleria, Alta Moda and Alta Sartoria events at La Plage Resort overlooking Isola Bella, performing some of her best-known songs across a show divided into four visual acts. She wore custom Dolce & Gabbana looks incorporating colourful gemstones, lace, the Sacred Heart motif, sculpted bodysuits and flowing chiffon — and on that front, the reception was considerably warmer.

Several commenters praised Lopez's physique, costumes and confidence even while questioning her singing. One viewer claimed she had built her career around being 'hot af', while another called her body 'pure perfection' and cited the staying power behind nearly three decades in music as evidence enough of her longevity. Whatever the vocal reception, nobody appeared to be questioning her right to be there.

The reaction is fresh, but the conversation is not. Lopez's 27 February 2010 performance of 'Until It Beats No More' on Saturday Night Live has remained a recurring reference point in discussions of her live singing. Her 2014 performance of 'I Luh Ya Papi' on American Idol prompted accusations from some viewers that she was miming, and her appearance with Pitbull and Claudia Leitte at the 2014 FIFA World Cup opening ceremony also drew criticism over technical problems, with television viewers reporting that the performers' microphones were difficult to hear.

That longer track record has given the latest clip plenty of ammunition, and the comment sections have not hesitated to use it.

What is perhaps most revealing about the reaction to the Taormina performance is what it actually says about Lopez's cultural position in 2026. The dragging is not, by and large, a rejection of her. It is, as one commenter instinctively captured, a separation: Jennifer Lopez the fashion figure, pop spectacle and performer from Jennifer Lopez the vocalist — with those two identities being judged very differently indeed.

And on the fashion front, at least, she had already been winning the week before Sicily. Lopez spent Labour Day sharing sun-soaked photographs from what appeared to be a holiday, including a mirror selfie in an intricately patterned one-piece swimsuit featuring gold, black and muted green detailing with jewelled embellishments and a thin belt at the waist. Her nail look from the same weekend — a warm, creamy beige shade styled by her long-time celebrity nail technician Tom Bachik, and quickly dubbed 'chai latte' by beauty commentators — has since been hailed as one of the most elegant autumn nail trends of the season.

Body always tea, indeed. The voice, as the internet has now firmly established, remains a separate matter.
