The trailer that's got everyone talking

DC Studios has dropped the final trailer for Supergirl, and if you thought this was going to be a wholesome, cape-twirling adventure in the mould of its DCU predecessor Superman, think again. The new footage gives fans the best look yet at what promises to be one of the summer's most talked-about blockbusters — complete with Jason Momoa's scene-stealing turn as alien bounty hunter Lobo, explosive cosmic action, and a heartbreaking threat to cinema's most beloved superdog, Krypto. Tickets are now on sale ahead of the film's UK release on 25 June 2026.

A Supergirl like you've never seen before

Milly Alcock, who first teased audiences as Kara Zor-El in James Gunn's Superman, finally takes centre stage in her own story — and it's a far cry from the bright, hopeful tone of her famous cousin. Based on Tom King and Bilquis Evely's acclaimed comic series Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, the film follows Kara as she reluctantly joins a young alien girl named Ruthye (Eve Ridley) on a dangerous quest for justice after Ruthye's father is murdered by the villainous Krem of the Yellow Hills, played by Matthias Schoenaerts. David Krumholtz and Emily Beecham round out the cast as Kara's parents.

Iron Man was the unlikely blueprint

Director Craig Gillespie — the man behind I, Tonya — has been refreshingly candid about where he drew his inspiration, and fans of the MCU may be surprised to hear which film topped his list. Rather than looking to DC's own back catalogue, Gillespie turned to Robert Downey Jr.'s 2008 debut as Iron Man as his tonal north star.

'I always loved the first Iron Man: flawed, complex, and conflicted. They sent me the Ana Nogueira script, and in two scenes, I was like, I'm in.'

It's a comparison that speaks volumes about the film's ambitions. Just as Iron Man balanced wit with genuine emotional weight, Gillespie is aiming for a Supergirl who is equally capable of breaking your heart and raising a laugh — sometimes within the same scene.

A writer on the rise and a release date to mark in your diary

Screenwriter Ana Nogueira, whose script so impressed Gillespie, is also reportedly catching the eye of DC Studios chiefs James Gunn and Peter Safran, with rumours swirling that she is being considered for further projects within the expanding DCU. It's a strong vote of confidence in a film that already feels like a major moment for the franchise. Supergirl arrives in UK cinemas on 25 June 2026 — and if the final trailer is anything to go by, it cannot come soon enough.
