Prince Harry is set to return to the United Kingdom next month for the one-year countdown to the 2027 Invictus Games — but don't expect a brotherly embrace to be part of the itinerary. Royal sources are pouring cold water on any hopes of a reconciliation between the Duke of Sussex and Prince William, with one expert describing the Wales household as being firmly off-limits.
Harry is expected to make the trip alongside Meghan and their two children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet. While the visit carries all the hallmarks of a family occasion, those close to the Royal Family say a reunion with his brother remains firmly out of reach.
'Bolted Shut': Why William Is Unlikely to Budge
Dan Wakeford, founder of Celebrity Intelligence, told Fox News that although there has been a slight softening in relations overall, the Prince and Princess of Wales are a different matter entirely.
"The Wales household is completely bolted shut right now. His stance has not changed, and they would not arrange to see Harry and Meghan outside an official public engagement."
Wakeford was equally blunt about any prospect of a face-to-face meeting between the brothers, saying, "A William and Catherine meeting is incredibly unlikely... I cannot see that happening at all." He did, however, describe the broader picture as "a slight thaw and a good beginning" — stopping well short of predicting "a complete reconciliation with the family" during this visit.

The rift between Harry and William has been a persistent feature of royal life since around 2018, and has deepened considerably since the Sussexes stepped back as senior royals and relocated to Montecito, California. It is widely believed the last time the two brothers spoke was briefly at the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II in September 2022 — a sombre setting that did little to ease the tensions between them.
The King Remains the 'Door That Might Open'
If there is cause for cautious optimism, it lies with King Charles. Wakeford suggested Harry is keen for his father to spend time with Archie and Lilibet — and that this particular meeting is more likely to materialise. "The King is the door that might open," he said. "Harry reportedly wants Charles to spend time with Archie and Lilibet, and he's been pushing for that. And I think that will likely happen from talking to folks in and around this."

The prospect of Charles meeting his grandchildren will be welcomed by those hoping to see at least some family bridges rebuilt. Harry and Charles were photographed together at the 2024 Invictus Games opening ceremony, a moment that suggested a tentative warming in their relationship.
'Huge Redeeming Features': A Former Aide Speaks Up
Amid the political noise around Harry's return, a rather more personal assessment has emerged from Jamie Lowther-Pinkerton, the former private secretary to both princes between 2005 and 2013, who also served as equerry to the late Queen Mother. Speaking to The Times, he offered a fond, if carefully worded, portrait of the Duke.
"I was, and am, very fond of him. He has huge redeeming features and I'm a perennial optimist."
Lowther-Pinkerton — known to Harry as JLP and praised warmly in his memoir Spare — described both princes as "brave guys" who had served with distinction in the military. He spoke admiringly of Harry's two tours of duty in Afghanistan, and of William's search-and-rescue flying missions in some of Britain's most treacherous conditions. He said he had always seen William as "the Lion King" — a natural leader — while acknowledging Harry's more spirited, unpredictable nature. "I loved them both," he added firmly.

It is a reminder that beyond the headlines and the palace briefings, those who have watched the brothers grow up retain a genuine affection for both men — even as the gap between them shows little sign of closing any time soon.
Harry's UK visit is expected to take place ahead of the 2027 Invictus Games, which the Duke founded in 2014 to support wounded, injured and sick servicemen and women through competitive sport.
