Imagine planning your wedding, only to discover the King and Queen might have to duck out before the speeches. That's the rather extraordinary situation facing Peter Phillips as his big day on 6 June draws closer.
The Scheduling Clash Nobody Planned For
Charles and Camilla are widely expected to attend Peter's wedding to Harriet Sperling at All Saints Church in Cirencester — a gorgeous Cotswolds ceremony that's been the talk of royal circles for weeks. But the very same day, it's been confirmed the royal couple will also attend Derby Day at Epsom Downs racecourse.
It marks the first time Their Majesties will attend as monarchs — a significant moment for British horseracing. Epsom's General Manager Jim Allen didn't hide his delight at the news.
"Their Majesties show great enthusiasm, interest and support for horseracing in the UK and their attendance next week will be a proud moment for all of the team here."
A Wedding With Some Very Notable Absences
The nuptials are set to be an intimate, close-knit affair in the Cotswolds — an area dear to both Peter and Harriet. Princess Anne and her ex-husband Captain Mark Phillips are expected, alongside Zara and Mike Tindall and the Edinburgh family.
But Prince Harry, Prince Andrew, and Sarah Ferguson will not be on the guest list. A friend of the couple was refreshingly candid about why.
"Peter and Harry haven't spoken for several years and have simply lost touch," the source explained. As for Andrew and Sarah, their presence was simply deemed too much of a distraction on what should be a joyful day.
Charles the Racing Fan Has Plenty to Cheer For
The King's love of horseracing is well documented — and hopefully his Derby Day ends better than his 2024 visit to Epsom, when his horse Treasure finished second from last. Still, having taken on the role of Jockey Club patron from the late Queen Elizabeth II — who only missed the Derby twice in nearly 70 years — this attendance clearly means a great deal to him.
One thing's for certain: 6 June 2026 is shaping up to be one of the busiest days in the royal calendar. Peter and Harriet, we hope someone saves them a slice of cake.
