He may be one of Hollywood's most enduring leading men, but at the 52nd Deauville American Film Festival in France on 4 September, Ethan Hawke was very much happy to share the spotlight — with the two most important women in his life.
The Oscar-nominated actor, 55, walked the opening night red carpet for the premiere of his latest film, The Weight, alongside his wife of 18 years, Ryan Hawke, and their rarely-seen 15-year-old daughter, Indiana. The family-of-three were all smiles as they posed for photographs, and by most accounts, it was the youngest Hawke who made the biggest impression.
Indiana's Red Carpet Moment
Indiana, the youngest of Ethan's four children, turned heads in a floor-length white dress featuring a keyhole cutout, with tiers of delicate lace adorning the skirt. She completed the bohemian-style look with a pink cardigan, a statement metallic gold handbag with a chainlink strap, and her hair worn down in loose, flowing waves. At one point during the evening, she was photographed leaning her head on her father's shoulder — a quietly sweet moment that seemed to capture the warmth of the occasion perfectly.
Ryan, meanwhile, coordinated elegantly with her husband, who was dressed head-to-toe in a sleek black suit. The producer wore a long-sleeve black maxi dress, styled with dangly earrings, layered gold necklaces and a snakeskin clutch. Together, the trio looked effortlessly polished — and genuinely happy.
A Rare Family Outing
Public appearances from this particular branch of the Hawke family are not a common occurrence. Indiana and her older sister Clementine, 18, have largely grown up away from the public eye — a deliberate contrast to the more public trajectories of Ethan's two elder children from his marriage to actress Uma Thurman: Maya, 28, and Levon Roan, 24, both of whom have pursued careers in entertainment.
This year has, however, seen a slight softening of that approach. In February, Indiana accompanied her father to the Oscar Nominees Luncheon, and days before that, both Indiana and Clementine joined their mother to support Ethan at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival. Deauville marks the latest in what has been a quietly notable year of family moments for the actor.
A Year of Big Family News
Deauville wasn't the only major family milestone on Ethan's calendar of late. Earlier this year, he and his ex-wife Uma Thurman reunited on 14 February to witness their daughter Maya Hawke marry musician Christian Lee Hutson in a ceremony in New York City. Guests included Maya's Stranger Things co-stars Finn Wolfhard, Sadie Sink and Joe Keery.
Reflecting on the experience at the Time100 gala in April, Ethan was characteristically candid about what the day meant to him.
"It means a lot because she's so happy and I love her husband. I feel like a really lucky man to watch her be so happy and to know that she's with somebody that I respect so much."
He also joked, in that self-deprecating way he does so well, that while one daughter may now have a husband, he's grateful to still rank highly with another.
"On my way here, my youngest daughter texted me and said, 'You may be Time100 but you're the number one most influential man in my life.' And I thought, 'Alright, not very many people would say that but I'm glad one of my kids does.'"
The Weight and What's Next
The Deauville appearance was also, of course, a professional one. The Weight, which Ethan stars in alongside Russell Crowe and Julia Jones, was among the films premiering at the festival. Ethan is also currently appearing in the FX series The Lowdown, in which he plays a self-styled "truthstorian" and bookseller named Lee Raybon.
For now, though, the images from Deauville tell the real story: a father, clearly proud, on a rare and rather lovely evening out with his family.
