It was one of the most powerful moments in recent Emmy Awards history. Michael J. Fox, 65, took to the stage in a wheelchair on Monday night and delivered a speech so raw, so quietly heroic, that it brought some of Hollywood's most composed faces to tears — among them his Shrinking co-star Harrison Ford and actress Nicole Kidman.
A Standing Ovation Decades in the Making
Accepting the Bob Hope Humanitarian Award at the 2026 Primetime Emmy Awards, held at the Peacock Theater in downtown Los Angeles, Fox addressed his diagnosis of Parkinson's disease — a condition he has lived with since he was just 29 years old, having been diagnosed in 1991.
"Initially I kept my Parkinson's diagnosis a secret," he told the room. "I worried it would affect my work and relationships with audiences." He admitted he once questioned whether fans would "laugh if they knew I was sick" — a vulnerability that clearly landed with everyone present.
"I understood that accepting Parkinson's didn't mean I had to surrender to it. It just meant I had to do everything I could for everyone living with this disease."
Harrison Ford, 84, who starred alongside Fox in the Apple TV+ comedy series Shrinking, was visibly emotional as the audience rose to its feet. Nicole Kidman, 59, was among those reduced to tears as Fox gave one of the most affecting speeches the awards circuit has seen in years.
Ford and Flockhart Arrive in Style
Earlier in the evening, Ford had arrived on the red carpet looking every inch the Hollywood legend, dressed in a sharp black tuxedo with satin lapels. By his side was his wife of 16 years, Calista Flockhart, 61, who turned heads in a striking fuchsia pink one-shoulder gown with a ruched bodice and floor-length silhouette.
The couple, who first met at the 2002 Golden Globes and married in 2010, were every inch the picture of enduring partnership. Ford himself has spoken warmly about what Flockhart means to him. At the 2023 Cannes Film Festival, he said of her:
"My life has been enabled by my lovely wife, who has supported my passions and my dreams and I'm grateful. You've given my life purpose and meaning and I'm grateful for that, so grateful."
Ford was at the Emmys not merely as a guest but as a nominee — recognised in the Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series category for his portrayal of Dr. Paul Rhodes in Shrinking. It marks a first Emmy nomination for the Indiana Jones star, who shares the category with co-star Michael Urie, 44, also a first-time nominee. When the nominations were announced, Ford texted both Urie and fellow nominee Jessica Williams, 35 — a characteristically warm gesture that his cast mates gleefully shared on social media.
"DUUUUUDE," Urie had messaged Ford, to which the veteran actor replied: "duuuuuude…./ u 2 ?! congrats Michael so well deserved!"
Fox's Remarkable Return
For many in the room, the emotional centrepiece of the night was undeniably Fox's speech. The Back to the Future star, who shot to global fame in the eighties as Marty McFly, took a six-year break from acting before returning to screens alongside Ford in Shrinking. He has said that returning to work has "prolonged" his life.
"It's really prolonged my life and made my life interesting in a way that I didn't think it would be to this point," Fox said. "I'm not retired from acting. But if I didn't act again, it would be for a very good reason. I let Parkinson's make decisions for me."
He closed his speech with a tribute to his wife Tracy Pollan — the couple have been married for 38 years and have four children together — thanking her and the family "for their sacrifices, for their patience, and for their love." They had walked the red carpet together earlier in the evening with their children.
The 2026 Emmys delivered many memorable moments, but it was this one — Fox at the podium, Ford and Kidman in tears, an industry on its feet — that felt truly unforgettable.
