Kim Kardashian has opened up about a frightening new health diagnosis that carries an unmistakable echo of one of her family's most painful losses — and the moment it was revealed on screen stopped viewers cold.
In the season eight trailer for The Kardashians, released on 17 September, the 45-year-old reality star and Skims founder disclosed that she has been diagnosed with esophagitis — inflammation of the oesophagus, the muscular tube that carries food from the throat to the stomach. The clip showed Kim lying in a hospital bed when a voice off-camera posed the question that was already on everyone's lips: "Didn't your father... isn't it what he died of?"
Kim confirmed the connection. Her mother, Kris Jenner, visibly shaken beside her, responded: "I can't. It makes me want to cry."
A Family Grief That Never Fully Fades
The diagnosis has reopened wounds that the Kardashian family have carried for more than two decades. Robert Kardashian Sr. — father to Kim, Kourtney, Khloé and Rob with Kris Jenner — died of esophageal cancer on 30 September 2003, aged 59. His illness, and death, came with devastating speed.

Khloé, 42, spoke candidly about the loss in an April 2025 episode of her podcast Khloé in Wonder Land, revealing that the suddenness of her father's decline left her consumed by guilt for years. "That guilt turned into anger," she recalled. "I was like, 'I need someone to blame, so I'm gonna blame my dad, 'cause he didn't tell me that it was terminal.'"
It was only after discussing her grief during the first season of Keeping Up With the Kardashians in 2007 that she began to find peace. "A house got lifted off of me after that conversation," she said. "I let go of all of this guilt and this anger, and now I could talk about my dad with smiles and happiness and admiration and understanding."
What Esophagitis Actually Means — and the Crucial Difference
Medical experts have been quick to draw an important distinction: esophagitis and esophageal cancer are not the same condition. Esophagitis is most commonly caused by acid reflux, certain medications, infections or allergies, according to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases. While the inflammation itself does not directly cause cancer, chronic cases can in some instances lead to a precancerous condition known as Barrett's oesophagus, which does carry an elevated risk of esophageal adenocarcinoma — particularly in those with ongoing acid reflux (GERD).
Approximately five to fifteen per cent of people with GERD develop Barrett's oesophagus, though the vast majority of those cases do not progress to cancer.
This is not Kim's first recent health alarm. In 2025, she revealed that doctors had discovered a small, unruptured brain aneurysm during an MRI scan. "It's been there for like years. It was here a few years ago," she said in an episode of The Kardashians, describing what her medical team had told her.
Turning Loss Into Legacy
Despite the renewed anxiety surrounding Kim's diagnosis, the family have long channelled their grief over Robert Sr.'s death into something meaningful. In 2019, the Kardashian sisters opened the UCLA Robert G. Kardashian Center for Esophageal Health — a medical centre dedicated to the research and treatment of esophageal disorders.

Kim made those remarks in a 2025 episode of The Kardashians, and they feel newly resonant now. Whatever the coming season reveals about her own health journey, the Kardashians have made it abundantly clear they intend to face it — as they always have — together, and on camera.
