There are proud dads, and then there's Michael Douglas — turning up hand-in-hand with his 23-year-old daughter Carys for one of the biggest nights of his year, and looking every bit as delighted to be photographed with her as for whatever the occasion actually was.
That occasion happened to be a significant one: on Sunday evening, the 81-year-old Oscar winner was named one of the inaugural Terra d'Honor Ambassadors at the first-ever Mallorca, Land of Honour awards ceremony, held at Costa Nord in Valldemossa. But it was the father-daughter arrival that stole the moment — the pair pausing hand-in-hand for photographers, clearly enjoying sharing the spotlight together.
A Coordinated Red Carpet Moment
Douglas kept things classic in a navy suit and open-collared white shirt, while Carys commanded attention in a sleek all-black look — a fitted strapless top and wide-leg trousers with delicate lace detailing at the hem, finished with strappy gold heels, gold cuffs, a choker necklace, and a snakeskin shoulder bag.
By all accounts, Douglas was in fine form all evening, reportedly making an effort to speak Spanish with guests and appearing, as one Spanish outlet noted, notably agile for a man of 81.
A Daughter Finding Her Own Stage
The appearance comes at a notable moment for Carys in her own right. Just weeks earlier, she made her professional stage debut in New York, starring as Nina in a production of Anton Chekhov's The Seagull — one of theatre's most demanding roles, previously tackled by the likes of Saoirse Ronan, Emilia Clarke, Carey Mulligan, Natalie Portman and Dame Helen Mirren.
"I grew up doing theatre, and I didn't study acting in school, but that's why I'm happy to be in such an informative arts space."
A Brown University graduate, Carys has since moved to New York to pursue her acting career in earnest. Both Michael and Catherine Zeta-Jones were reported to be enormously proud of her stage debut, with Zeta-Jones publicly sharing her support on social media ahead of the production's limited run.
Given the family she comes from — her mother an Academy Award and Tony Award winner, her father one of Hollywood's most enduring leading men — the bar is set rather high. On the evidence of Sunday evening in Valldemossa, Carys seems entirely unbothered by that.
The Honour Itself
Douglas was chosen to speak on behalf of all 12 inaugural honourees, a fitting role given his history with the island — he bought his S'Estaca estate in the Tramuntana mountains back in 1989 and has barely left since. The property includes vineyards producing award-winning local wines, and Douglas has long been involved in the cultural and political life of Valldemossa.
Over the years, he and Zeta-Jones have welcomed a string of Hollywood friends to the estate, introducing Mallorca to an international audience that might otherwise never have found it.
He joins 11 other inaugural honourees spanning fashion, science, journalism, and business — among them Mallorcan designer Pablo Erroz and pharmacist Marta Munar, founder of dermocosmetics reference G19 Pharmacy. The awards are intended to continue growing, recognising new ambassadors each year.
