Richard Gere may be one of Hollywood's most enduring leading men, but on his 77th birthday, it was his youngest son who took centre stage — tiptoeing up to wrap his arms around his parents in a moment that's as adorable as it is rare.
The Pretty Woman star celebrated turning 77 on 31st August in typically understated fashion, gathering close family for a low-key evening party. It was his wife, Alejandra Silva, who gave the world a glimpse into the occasion, sharing a series of warm photographs on social media.
A Birthday to Remember
Alejandra looked elegant for the intimate celebration, wearing a white maxi dress with block heels as she embraced her husband in a tender moment caught on camera. Her caption left little doubt about the depth of their bond.
"No one I'd rather spend my life with, happy birthday, I love you, we love you."
The couple, who married in 2018, share two young sons: Alexander, seven, and James, six. In one particularly charming photograph drawn from the family's private album, one of the boys made a dash towards his parents mid-photo, party hat perched atop his long hair, dressed smartly in a shirt and trousers. Standing on tiptoe, he barely reached his 5'10" father's waist — but that hardly dampened his enthusiasm as he threw his arms around them both.
A Family Kept Carefully Out of the Spotlight
Richard and Alejandra have been deliberate about keeping their family life private, and the birthday snaps felt very much in keeping with that approach — warm and genuine rather than performative. The couple welcomed Alexander in February 2019 and James in April 2020, and have spent much of their family life away from the glare of the press.
The pair even relocated to Alejandra's native Spain for a year at one point, an experience Gere reflected on fondly in a previous conversation with HELLO! magazine.
"She was really happy, because [of] her family and friends and her culture and her city and food – all of it, all of the cultural great stuff – so that was fabulous."
Richard is also stepfather to Alejandra's 13-year-old son, Albert, from a previous relationship — making theirs a lively and blended household by any measure.
The Next Generation of Geres
While the birthday celebrations shone a light on his youngest boys, Richard's eldest son, 26-year-old Homer Gere — whom he shares with ex-wife Carey Lowell — has been quietly forging his own path in the industry. Homer recently appeared in Ryan Murphy's drama series The Shards alongside Kaia Gerber, and has spoken openly about the guidance his father has offered along the way.
Speaking to People magazine, Homer was effusive about the practical wisdom Richard has passed on — less about on-set technique and more about longevity and integrity in a notoriously fickle business. "How to carry yourself on set, how to make an acting career work in a way that's sustainable," Homer explained. "And for that, he's been the most invaluable resource. I mean, truly better than I could possibly hope for, from anyone."
It's a portrait of a man who has clearly found his footing not just on screen, but at home — and if a small boy in a party hat stealing his birthday photo is any indication, life at 77 looks rather wonderful for Richard Gere.
