A Birthday Tribute Worth the Wait
Ryan Reynolds has once again reminded the world why he is arguably the internet's most devoted husband. The Deadpool star took to Instagram to celebrate wife Blake Lively's 39th birthday, sharing a collection of rare family photographs that offered an unusually intimate glimpse into their private life together.
The images featured the couple's four children — James, 11, Inez, 9, Betty, 6, and Olin, 3 — though Reynolds stayed true to form, carefully cropping or covering each child's face with an emoji to shield them from the public eye. It's a practice the pair have maintained since welcoming their eldest daughter in 2014.
"August 25th is this family's Super Bowl. Happy Birthday to the very best human I know. You're not just another courageous and deeply kind genius. You're also unreasonably cute."
The 49-year-old actor posted the tribute the day after the birthday itself, adding with characteristic wit: "I know how lucky I am that you were born. Every time I've ever hit my head, it's YOUR life that flashes before my eyes."
A Glimpse Behind the Curtain
Among the snapshots Reynolds chose to share was one showing Lively embracing one of their daughters, another of the Gossip Girl alum giving one of her little ones a piggyback, and a particularly charming image of one of their daughters dressed in a pink superhero outfit, play-fighting with both parents on what appeared to be the Deadpool set.
The photos are a rarity by design. Reynolds and Lively, who married in 2012, have been consistent and deliberate about keeping their children out of the spotlight — a stance Lively articulated plainly back in 2016.
"Our child hasn't had the opportunity to choose whether or not she wants her personal life to be public. So in order to give her as much normality as possible, we want her to have a childhood like we had."
Raising Kids With Their Feet on the Ground
Despite their extraordinary circumstances — fame, wealth, and a lifestyle far removed from the ordinary — both Reynolds and Lively have spoken openly about their determination to raise grounded, empathetic children. Reynolds addressed the balancing act in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter in 2024, acknowledging that their children's upbringing is inevitably "different" from his and Lively's own working-class roots.

"We both grew up very working class," Reynolds noted. "I remember when they were very young, I used to think, 'Oh god, I would never have had a gift like this when I was a kid.' Then I realised that that's not really their bag of rocks to carry."
Still, the Free Guy actor said he feels cautiously confident they are doing right by their brood. "They're already very much in touch with gratitude and understanding the world enough to have a strong sense of empathy," he told The Hollywood Reporter. "Those are the things that I would think would indicate we're doing an OK job."
A Love Story Still Going Strong
Reynolds and Lively have long been one of Hollywood's most celebrated couples, their relationship defined publicly by Reynolds' affectionate and frequently hilarious tributes — but also, increasingly, by their shared commitment to a family life conducted largely away from the cameras. The birthday post, warm and witty in equal measure, was a reminder that behind the quips lies something rather more genuine.
Blake Lively turned 39 on 25th August.
