The actress shared a video on Instagram showing herself strapped to the top of a flying biplane, wearing protective goggles and a red safety vest, camera in hand, as the aircraft performed dramatic turns and rolls — including a stomach-dropping moment when it flipped completely upside down.
"Watch out, Tom Cruise," Sweeney wrote in the caption, and if the reaction from Hollywood was anything to go by, the message landed.
The internet responds
The clip spread rapidly, drawing comparisons to Cruise's celebrated aerial wing-walking sequence in Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, in which the actor performed a high-altitude stunt on a Stearman biplane, rolling and looping at speeds of up to 140 mph at 8,000 feet in the air. It is already considered one of the franchise's most spectacular set pieces.
The official Top Gun Instagram account was quick to join the fun, commenting, 'Feel the need for speed.' Global action entertainment brand Nitro Circus also chimed in with, 'Come fly with us Sydney!' Actress Leslie Mann offered a rather more cautious response: 'Be careful!!'
Sweeney's friend Eddy Chen, meanwhile, offered perhaps the most relatable reaction of all: 'Thank gawd I didn't go.'
A UK-based stunt with professional backing
The stunt was carried out with The Wing Walk Company, which is believed to have confirmed the experience took place in the UK. The company left a glowing comment on the post: 'You were brilliant… we LOVED having you!' It's a ringing endorsement that suggests Sweeney — whatever else she gets up to — is a natural in the sky.
For anyone who follows the actress's social media, the stunt won't come as a complete shock. Sweeney has previously shared footage of bungee jumping, helicopter rides and speedboat trips, suggesting a genuine appetite for pushing limits rather than a one-off publicity flourish.
