Taylor Swift Chooses Travis Kelce's NFL Return Over the Emmys — and Tom Cruise Was There Too

Taylor Swift made her priorities crystal clear on Monday night, choosing Arrowhead Stadium over the Peacock Theatre as she cheered on her new husband Travis Kelce in the Kansas City Chiefs' 2026 NFL season opener against the Denver Broncos. It was the first match Swift had attended since the couple's much-talked-about summer wedding, and she brought rather stellar company — none other than Tom Cruise, who joined her in the box alongside Swift's father Scott, Kelce's mother Donna, and his brother Jason.

The Chiefs won comfortably, 31–10, and Kelce marked the occasion in style, moving to second place on the NFL's all-time list of most receiving yards by a tight end — his first record as a married man.

The Kelce–Swift union took place on 3 July at Madison Square Garden in New York, a venue Kelce himself described as offering a "private" setting "without a lot of distractions" — which is one way to describe an event reportedly attended by close to 1,000 guests drawn from the very highest tiers of sport, music, and Hollywood.

Among those in attendance were actors Bradley Cooper, Zoë Kravitz, Hugh Grant and Ethan Hawke, models Gigi Hadid and Karlie Kloss, comedian Chris Rock, film director Steven Spielberg, retired quarterback Tom Brady, and Mariska Hargitay, a long-time friend of the bride. Stevie Nicks performed before the ceremony, and the officiant — in a casting choice that only the Swifties could have dreamed up — was Adam Sandler.

Jason Kelce, the retired Eagles centre and Travis's brother, offered perhaps the most vivid account of the day yet, describing it as "a melting pot" of guests spanning the football world, Nashville's music scene, Hollywood, and their hometown of Cleveland Heights. Several celebrities have since hinted that phones were strictly off-limits, which may explain why not a single image from the ceremony has surfaced publicly.

Swift's absence from the Emmy Awards ceremony was widely anticipated — her documentary series The Eras Tour: The Final Show had already been nominated in the Creative Arts Emmys earlier this month, where it lost out to The Muppet Show. But the show's organisers were not about to let the occasion pass without at least nodding to the elephant not in the room.

In a pre-recorded sketch, Emmy host Mariska Hargitay reprised her Law & Order: SVU role as Olivia Benson, leading her team of detectives in an investigation into whether Swift would actually show up. Swift herself appeared in the clip — playing a fictional detective — and delivered the winking punchline with characteristic self-awareness.

Swift's cat, Olivia Benson — named after Hargitay's character — also made an appearance in the clip, because of course she did.

The season opener represented something of a fresh start for the Chiefs, who struggled to a 6–11 finish last season. There had been genuine speculation that Kelce, now in his 14th NFL season, might retire, particularly after his close friend and quarterback Patrick Mahomes tore ligaments in his left knee. Instead, Kelce chose to return, and Mahomes rehabbed in time to face the Broncos as Kansas City look to bounce back from their first losing campaign since 2012.

Off the field, Kelce has been busy expanding his business interests, including purchasing a minority share in the Cleveland Guardians. Meanwhile, speaking on his New Heights podcast earlier this month, he gave fans a rare glimpse into married life.

"Me and Taylor are so thankful for everybody that showed up," he said. "From the vows to just seeing everyone, to how much fun we had throughout the entire evening. We've been having so much fun since the big day."

On the evidence of Monday night's scoreline — and the company in the box — it rather seems that way.
