The Tease Heard Round the Rock World

Two years after one of rock's most heartbreaking retirements, Aerosmith appear to be edging back toward the stage — and their fans are paying very close attention. On 5th October, the legendary Boston band posted a cryptic video to their social media channels featuring frontman Steven Tyler and renowned music photographer Ross Halfin outside the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles, placing letters on the venue's marquee to reveal the words "Aerosmith & Friends" alongside two dates: 29th October and 1st November.

The clip is characteristically self-aware. Halfin needles Tyler over whether he can even spell "Aerosmith" as the singer works on the sign, and Tyler makes a point of emphasising the "and friends" addition — suggesting whatever is planned may not be a straightforward band headline show. The video concluded with a caption reading "&…. all will be revealed tomorrow. 7am PT", with a full announcement promised for 6th October.

"Don't you miss performing?" Halfin asks in the clip, to which Tyler replies: "Of all the things I ever missed, I miss my mind the most."

Why the Retirement Happened — and Why This Matters

Aerosmith's retirement was no ordinary rock 'n' roll farewell. The band was forced to cancel their Peace Out farewell tour entirely in August 2024 after it emerged that Tyler would not fully recover from serious vocal cord damage he sustained during their first show back, in New York on 9th September 2023. A statement issued at the time was stark in its finality.

"Sadly, it is clear, that a full recovery from his vocal injury is not possible. We have made a heartbreaking and difficult, but necessary, decision — as a band of brothers — to retire from the touring stage."

That declaration seemed to close the door permanently on one of rock's most storied live acts. Yet signs of life have been quietly building. Tyler performed at a charity event and appeared at the Back to the Beginning concert for Black Sabbath in 2025, suggesting his voice had returned to at least a workable level. Meanwhile, guitarist Joe Perry hinted last year that some form of reunion gig was likely on the horizon, telling interviewers: "I know there's gotta be at least another Aerosmith gig, and I'm not looking forward to putting the set list together for that one, but I don't know, man. We'll just have to see."

Off-Stage Turbulence

The Hollywood Bowl tease arrives amid significant off-stage complications for Tyler. He is currently the subject of a sexual assault lawsuit brought by Julia Misley, formerly Julia Holcomb, who claims Tyler sexually abused her over a period of years beginning in 1973, when she was a high school sophomore aged 16 and he was 25. Tyler has denied the allegations.

The case took an unexpected turn in September 2026, when Los Angeles County Judge Patricia A. Young abruptly recused herself just two weeks before a trial date, after disclosing she had been consulting with another judge who had previously been removed from the same case. The September trial date was automatically taken off the calendar as a result, leaving the case without a sitting judge or confirmed new trial date.

Julia Misley (formerly Holcomb) filed a sexual assault lawsuit against Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler, alleging abuse during their 1970s relationship, when she was a minor. Tyler has denied the allegations.

Legal proceedings have also included a dispute over abortion evidence, with Tyler's legal team seeking to exclude references to a 1975 abortion while simultaneously arguing that, should the court allow it, a later abortion in 1979 — involving another man — should also be admissible for context regarding the emotional distress damages being claimed. The judge had yet to rule on that motion at the time of writing.

Tyler addressed the guardianship arrangement at the heart of Misley's claims in his 2011 memoir, Does the Noise in My Head Bother You?, writing: "I went and slept at her parents' house for a couple of nights, and her parents fell in love with me, signed papers over for me to have custody, so I wouldn't get arrested if I took her out of state."

What Comes Next

The full details of whatever Aerosmith and their mystery "friends" have planned for the Hollywood Bowl were set to be revealed on 6th October. Whether the shows mark a genuine comeback or a one-off celebratory event remains to be seen — but after two years of silence and uncertainty, the rock world will not need much convincing to show up and find out.
