There may not have been a birthday cake in sight, but Demi Lovato's 34th celebrations looked pretty spectacular all the same — a sun-soaked escape to the Bahamas, a tiny red string bikini, and a love letter from her husband that would make anyone blush.

The singer, who turned 34 on 20 August, shared a carousel of holiday snaps to Instagram earlier this week, treating followers to a glimpse of what birthday fun looks like when you're Demi Lovato. Spoiler: it involves pristine turquoise waters, a wardrobe full of swimwear, and the Bahamas' famously photogenic swimming pigs.

'Someone's Gotta Hold It Down'

Lovato made no apology for going big on the birthday content. The post featured everything from a close-up of her sand-dusted figure gazing out over the water, to dressed-up dinner shots and beaming selfies alongside the island's beloved swimming pigs. She rounded it all off with a caption that had just the right amount of sass:

"Someone's gotta hold it down in the Bahamas."

Fans were quick to flood the comments with adoration, with followers calling her "beautiful" and "gorgeous" in their droves. The post also showcased a black-and-white two-piece and a tropical print bathing suit alongside the now-iconic red bikini — Demi, it's fair to say, came prepared.

Jutes Sends Love from the Road

Conspicuously absent from the trip was her husband, Jordan 'Jutes' Lutes, who was busy completing his North American tour while Demi celebrated with a group of close friends, including Allison Petitti and Matthew Scott Montgomery.

But Jutes — who married Demi in a California ceremony last year — made sure she knew she was on his mind. Taking to Instagram himself, he posted a heartfelt birthday tribute that was equal parts sweet and endearingly soppy:

"Happy birthday to the hottest, funniest, sweetest, most talented human alive… not to mention the best dog momma to ever do it. Apparently 99% of my camera roll is you with the babies. I love you more than you will ever know!"

He had proposed to Demi in December 2023 with a pear-shaped diamond ring.

Body Acceptance, Not Perfection

Demi's birthday photos have inevitably reignited conversation around her physical transformation in recent years, with some online suggesting she may have used weight loss medication — claims she has not addressed. What she has spoken about, openly and movingly, is her ongoing recovery from bulimia and the daily work of learning to live peacefully in her own skin.

Speaking on Penn Badgley's podcast Podcrushed, Demi opened up about the distinction she draws between body positivity and body acceptance — and why the latter feels more honest for where she is right now.

"I'm trying to learn body acceptance rather than body positivity, because body positivity feels like I can't even reach that yet," she said. "The main thing that I'm working on is just body acceptance, and just looking in the mirror and being like, 'This body is strong.' This body saved my life and fought for my life when I overdosed. This body is a miracle."

She works with a nutritionist and a therapist who specialises in eating disorders as part of an ongoing treatment plan — a team she has credited with helping her develop practical tools around body image. In March 2021, she also clarified on Instagram that she does not count calories, over-exercise, restrict or purge, adding: "I especially don't live my life according to the diet culture."

It's a refreshingly grounded message from someone who has spent years in the public eye — and a reminder that behind the birthday bikini shots, there's a great deal of quiet, steady work going on.
