She has become one of Hollywood's most quietly courageous figures, and now Emma Heming Willis is speaking out once again about the reality of caring for her husband Bruce Willis as the beloved action star continues to live with frontotemporal dementia (FTD). In a candid appearance on the TODAY Show, the model and author gave fans a rare health update — and her words were as honest as they were heartbreaking.

How Bruce Is Doing Right Now

Emma, 47, was measured but warm as she addressed Bruce's condition, reassuring viewers that the 71-year-old remains physically strong even as the disease takes its toll. The couple, who married in 2009 and share daughters Mabel Ray, 14, and Evelyn Penn, 12, are facing the illness as a united family. Bruce's specific form of FTD — primary progressive aphasia (PPA) — gradually strips away language over time, meaning communication has had to evolve.

"We're doing well. My husband is supported and loved. We're doing the best we can under the circumstances."

Love Without Words

Emma has spoken movingly about how the couple have adapted to Bruce's changing condition, making clear that while words may be fading, their bond is anything but. In a previous interview with TODAY around the release of her 2025 book, she explained that during an ABC special with Diane Sawyer she shared she isn't sure Bruce ever fully understood his diagnosis — yet she emphasised he remains mobile and in good physical health overall. "The language is going, and we've learned to adapt," she said. "We have a way of communicating with him which is just a different way." As she put it simply: "It's just his brain that is failing him. For us, our communication is different, but our connection is very much intact."

Emma's Mission Beyond Her Own Family

Since Bruce's family first revealed an aphasia diagnosis in 2022 — later refined to FTD in 2023 — Emma has channelled her experience into advocacy. She founded the Emma and Bruce Willis Fund to raise awareness of FTD, support research, and champion caregivers. Her book, The Unexpected Journey: Finding Strength, Hope, and Yourself on the Caregiving Path, released in September 2025, serves as both a personal memoir and a practical guide for others walking a similar path. Her message to fellow caregivers is consistent: look after yourself too. "If we're not caring for ourselves, how can we care for the people that we love in our lives," she said.

A Family Rallying Round

Bruce is surrounded by a close-knit blended family. Alongside his two younger daughters with Emma, he shares daughters Rumer, 37, Scout, 34, and Tallulah, 32, with his former wife Demi Moore. On Bruce's 71st birthday earlier this year, Emma took to Instagram to reflect on the journey, encouraging fans to honour him by supporting FTD research or simply checking in on a caregiver in their own life — a small gesture, she noted, that can mean the world.
