Christina Aguilera traded the recording studio for the Opéra de Monte-Carlo on Friday, bringing her signature brand of old-Hollywood glamour to one of Monaco's most glittering nights of the year — and performing live into the bargain.
The Grammy-winning singer attended the 20th Anniversary Gala of the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation on 18 September, joining Prince Albert II, Princess Charlene, and a constellation of international stars for the black-tie milestone celebration at the Salle Garnier opera house.
A Night Fit for Royalty
Aguilera was far from just a glamorous guest. The 45-year-old was part of the evening's musical lineup, sharing the stage with legendary tenor Plácido Domingo and the iconic disco act Sister Sledge. Actors Richard Gere and Monica Bellucci attended as guests of honour, while French actress Isabelle Huppert and model Eva Herzigová were also among the celebrated faces in the room.
Prince Albert and Princess Charlene — resplendent in their own black-tie finest — posed together on arrival before joining the evening's guests for a star-studded group photograph, marking a foundation anniversary that carries deeply personal significance for the Monegasque sovereign.
"These twenty years have been shaped by the people we have worked with, the partnerships we have built and the places we have sought to protect," the Foundation said in a statement marking the milestone.
The Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation was established in June 2006, just two months after Albert completed a personal expedition to the North Pole — a journey of approximately 100 kilometres that helped draw international attention to the effects of climate change in the Arctic. The foundation has since supported 838 projects across more than 100 countries, focusing on climate change, biodiversity and water resources.
The Gown That Stopped the Room
Working with her stylist Chris Horan, Aguilera arrived in an all-black Versace Embroidered Silk gown — a showstopping piece crafted from 100% black silk and currently retailing at $7,790 (approximately £6,100). The design features silver beaded embellishments around the neckline that carry a distinctly reptilian texture, giving way to a draped cowl neckline before tapering into a form-fitted waist and skirt. A thigh-high front slit completed the look, offering both movement and a glimpse of the footwear beneath.
That footwear was equally considered: a pair of Christian Louboutin pointed-toe stiletto pumps in glossy black leather, their scarlet soles catching the light as she posed for photographers. The silver beading continued across the back of the gown as well, ensuring the look read beautifully from every angle.
The accompanying cowl bodice created a textural element that flowed like water, while Aguilera's glam was soft and icy, punctuated by a sultry black liner and bright pink blush.
Her blonde hair was styled with a quaffed front and classic bouncy curls framing her face, and she completed the ensemble with several pieces from Chopard — a fitting finishing touch for an evening steeped in Monaco's trademark luxury.
Twenty Years and Counting
The foundation's anniversary was more than a glamorous occasion — it was a reminder of the environmental work Prince Albert has championed for two decades, following in the footsteps of his great-great-grandfather Prince Albert I, a pioneering oceanographer who conducted scientific expeditions to the Arctic around the turn of the 20th century.
As the foundation looks ahead, its message was characteristically understated but purposeful: "The journey continues."
For Aguilera, it was a night that proved she remains every inch the consummate performer and style icon — equally at home on a royal red carpet as she is centre stage. Monaco, it's safe to say, was putty in her hands.
